This very handsome panda was inspired by the ancient Chinese animal-shaped bronze vessels of the Shang and Chou dynasties that were crafted for use as pitchers, bowls and goblets. According to the artist, "the surface patterns were complex and based upon monster or dragon masks with staring eyes (t'ao-t'ieh) and square spirals (lei-wen) in the negative spaces around the monster masks. In time the bronzes became encrusted with beautiful green patinas."
