Washington, D.C.'s famous cherry blossoms were featured in several of the pandas in the exhibition, including this happy beast. The artist reportedly took her inspiration from ancient Japanese screen paintings: "My design ... employs motifs commonly found in Japanese art, such as flowering cherry and peach blossom trees, ornamental birds, and a traditional metallic gold background. Cherry Blossom panda was designed to celebrate the coming of Spring, and the activities that mark Washington D.C.'s much anticipated annual Cherry Blossom Festival."
